Effective Cost
Reduction Strategies
We really, really, really hate sales. Sales is the worst. We want to keep you on for a long time and have you tell your friends about us.
Menu of Options
We always give you a number of cost options, and the information to make a confident decision. We can intuitively empathize with company leadership in every stage of a company lifecycle, and meet you where you're at.
If desired, detailed project plans can be presented to clients for each work unit that's about to begin. Worked can be "chunked," with stopping/reevaluation points between each.
Kick off with a Defined Project
To build trust with a client and also improve Flatiron’s ability to estimate LOE and timelines accurately, it is often advisable to kick off with only a few small and clearly defined work modules. Flatiron will provide the client with initial expectations for min/max bounds of effort as well as estimated date of completion, and check in with the client should the work near the possibility of exceeding those bounds. At the end of each module of work, Flatiron will provide the client with explanations of why end results may have differed from expectations. Typical sources of variability for “standard” execution projects include that (a) existing data analytics infrastructure/models need to be untangled, (b) technical problems needed to be brought to engineering and solved together, (c) raw data collection (owned by client software teams) contains critical issues that require sustained partnership to address, or (d) that communications with partners/stakeholders were more time consuming than anticipated or had long turnarounds.
Push to the Lowest Rate
Flatiron always wants to push clients to the lowest total project cost possible. We want to minimize your costs, but also top talent is actually a precious resource for us as well. For more execution-oriented “standard” situations we generally look to minimize higher-cost leadership hours on work to the extent possible and push execution to the lowest cost resource that will do the job excellently (unless the client requests otherwise, which is rare) within a reasonable time frame. For situations where there is more creative thinking upfront and where higher-cost talent is critical to success, we work with the client to set realistic guidelines to manage this cost. Typically these clients will see initial weeks/months with higher leadership costs before resource distribution rebalances towards execution.
Look Offshore in Some Cases
Flatiron is continuously collecting qualified individuals in cheaper locales and then training them to our standards. It takes time to find good candidates, however. Pricing is variable based on location. We have been focusing on Analytics Engineers but will soon be adding Data Infrastructure Engineers.
Bring on Continuous
Resources Responsibly
We fully support you seeing just how far you can get with fewer people. We'll give you best guesses re what each additional resource could unlock and then help you pick check-in points for re-evaluating.
Transparency + Granular Controls
We provide our clients with itemized, detailed timesheets to peruse at their discretion. Flatiron audits all timesheets before invoicing, using a variety of auditing methods.
Set Clear Cost Boundaries
For any vein of work we can set clear cost boundaries. For example, for expensive vision-setting resources we can say "Cut it off at <x> hours"
